work of fiction, the film rang true. A viewer, who allows himself to be captured by the essence of this movie, will be emotionally bound. The film appears to
have been made as a historical keepsake in order to demonstrate a point of view. Thus, while it is history, it is history looked at through a particular lenses. It
appears that the filmmaker did have a fascination with the subject matter. The care necessary to produce a film of this caliber certainly mandates attention to detail and intense involvement
in production aspects. Clearly, Gillo Pontecorvo was up to the task. It appears that the film was intended for mature audiences, and particularly for those who tend to be introspective.
In other words, this film attempted to demonstrate a point of view about the Battle of Algiers as opposed to objectively informing the audience about facts. Further, it highlights the
plight of the people who were present at the time that the war broke. While it has also the ability to convey how life was different during this era to
a contemporary audience, it is best suited to those who are not uninformed about history. In fact, it helps to know the history of the battle in an objective sense
before viewing the motion picture. The Hutchinson Dictionary of World History says that the Battle of Algiers erupted due to the conflict in the country between 1954 and 1962
("Algiers" PG). The conflict took place between Algerian nationalists and the French, which resulted in Algerian independence (PG). Obviously, the native Algerians and the French will see things differently.
