and much of the world, in recent times. It is perhaps one of the most powerful and emotional social issues in the United States and is also a very powerful political issue as well. From a sociological perspective there are many ways in which an individual could examine this topic, especially when putting aside ones own personal opinions concerning same sex marriage. And there are many ways one could look at this subject when examining the question of whether this is something that is part of the new American family. The following paper examines three different articles that address aspects of same sex marriages and the paper focuses on examining these articles from a functionalism perspective, answering the question of whether this is now part of the new American family, with the answer being yes. The Battle Over Same Sex Marriages In first examining this issue, or battle, it is important to illustrate some of the foundations of the functionalism approach. "The starting point of all Functionalism is that all societies have certain basic needs - Functional requirements which must be met if a society is to survive" (Functionalism as a Sociological Perspective, 2007). With functionalism there is the premise that the basic needs and desires of a society to maintain stability and social order are often very influential in where a society moves (Functionalism as a Sociological Perspective, 2007). In the past homosexuality in the United States has not been accepted as anything less than abnormal. The majority of the population believed this and as such same sex marriages were not even a question, or a possibility, for the society.
