While the Battle of Gettysburg may have signaled the beginning of the end of this chapter in history, it was that way only because of one man's inability to clinch the victory. Had it not been for a significant blunder by what was the otherwise stellar military prowess of Robert E. Lee - not the least of which was his inherent sense of timing - the Civil war might not have ended when it did. Lee's bigger than life persona was not enough to save him from his own poor insight that was a large part of the equation of his ultimate surrender in a battle that served to determine the nation's future course. the nations future course. With a conviction unlike others of his military status, Lee single-handedly shaped the Battle of Gettysburg to serve his personal agenda; amidst differences of opinion with
his men, Lee stuck to his course of action for better or for worse and ultimately failed for his efforts. The irony of this reality is how the Battle
of Gettysburg has gone down in history as one of the most brutal in terms of bloodshed when its entire objective was to defend the tenets of democracy. Such
a paradox notwithstanding, the Gettysburg conflict was responsible for two important factors: 1) setting America on her path of progress as a fledgling nation and 2) establishing Robert E. Lee
as a pivotal contributor to the outcome. SUPPORTING ARGUMENTS 1) Robert E. Lee a) Shrewd and defiant military man whose objective was to make the Battle at Gettysburg the
