American Civil War. "Lee hoped an invasion would fuel the northern peace movement and, at least, disrupt the Union war effort" (The Gettysburg Campaign). II. THE TURNING POINT:
A BATTLE TO REMEMBER "Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that
all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure"
(Lincoln PG). When President Abraham Lincoln spoke those words on November 19, 1863, he fully understood the detrimental impact such a civil war had waged upon the constitutional proclamation
for democracy. For a country that espoused benevolence and compassion, the United States had entered into one of the bloodiest battles ever to be recorded throughout history.
Robert E. Lee was both a shrewd and defiant military man. It can readily be argued that is influences upon the Civil War were
such that had he not been a primary participant in the battle, history would have recorded the ultimate outcome as having been significantly different. It was not unlike Lee
to utilize every means possible in order to gain an edge over the enemy, which included a seemingly insignificant act of reading the northern newspapers "carefully for clues to troop
movements" (Walters 24). When the war hit full force, Lee was not going to rest until he saw to it that the Confederate army attacked the Unions AOP.
