The construction of the BMX track for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics is only a minute part of the overall construction being undertaken for the event. Contextually the BMX track can be seen as part of the Velodrome, which is a central part of the Velopark. The integration with the Velodrome resulted in construction of the track only taking place following the completion of the Velodrome structure. The 400 meter track along with 6000 temporary seats to watch the Olympic events has been designed in line with government policies, local plan requirements and careful consideration of the lifecycle of the facilities, including the ability to be adapted for legacy use. The current status of the project has seen the track itself completed, although there may be some required alterations have been identified which should be implemented before the start of the Olympics. After the Olympics the BMX track will be reconfigured in order to facilitate leisure use. With a friendly approach to the press, completion on schedule and a generally successful approach to project management this may be seen as a good example of the way in which it is a small element of the large projects which all come together to create a mega project success. 1.
