which many women faced. She was considered a very successful writer until her work "The Awakening." "Several publishers rejected her second novel, and she destroyed the manuscript. The Awakening (1899),
the novel now considered her masterpiece, attracted a storm of negative criticism for its lyrical depiction of a womans developing independence and sensuality" (Anonymous Kate Chopin (1851-1904) randywanat). However, in
1899, despite the fact that many individuals, primarily men, had condemned her work, "the Wednesday Club invited Kate to do a reading and over 300 women came to applaud and
praise her. Contrary to rumors, the awakening was never banned, nor was Chopin ever denied membership in any literary societies" (Anonymous Kate Chopin: The Woman Chopin.html). This particular novel, however,
was lost to the literary world until it "was rediscovered in the 1960s" (Anonymous Kate Chopin au-chopin-kate.asp). As would be expected, such a novel is bound to have a
great deal of symbolism within. Her book was addressing many problems known to women, primarily those which hinder the growth of the person aside from being mothers and wives. In
the following paper we examine the symbolic nature of the sea in Chopins book, illustrating how it provides a connection to life and death for the character of Edna.
