Airlines, of course, are continually upgrading their fleets to provide safer, more economical and more efficient aircraft for their passengers. This creates a highly competitive industry as airliners are increasingly more expensive to replace and the number of additional aircraft required per year is somewhat limited. Consequently, jobs ranging from in-flight support personnel, to pilots, to airframe and powerplant maintenance positions are affected by issues of safety. The airline industry as a whole, in fact, is affected by issues of safety. It can be contended the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were a wakeup call for the airline industry. These attacks occurred within the sanctity of U.S. borders and demonstrated that the industry was solely lacking in terms of a truly effective and comprehensive safety plan. Despite the many negative impacts, however, the airline industry not only survived it ultimately overcame the economic impacts and instituted safety changes which will serve to benefit it well into the future. The 2001 terrorist attacks in the U.S. affected practically every aspects of our lives. Many of the impacts of the terrorists attacks affected the airlines directly. Immediately after the attacks gas prices began to rise This resulted in a tremendous economic impact to the airlines as gasoline costs comprise a significant percentage of their operating costs. Today we have enjoyed a decrease in prices from the climax that they reached in the months following the attacks but initially the airlines were impacted hard by the increase in prices.
