The nervous system encompasses the brain and various type so nerves, which includes afferent nerves. This term is derived from Latin, ad meaning "towards" and ferro, I carry (Streeten). In
other words, afferent nerves carry sensory impulses from all parts of the body to the brain and efferent nervous (Latin ex meaning "from") which carry messages from the brain to
the muscles and other organs (Streeten). The nervous system can be considered as composed of two major systems, the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system (ANS)(Bakewell). The
somatic nervous system encompasses the sensory components of the body, that is, sensations from the eyes, the nose and other sense organs and transmit these sensations to the brain (Streeten).
It also encompasses signals from the brain to the skeletal muscles, permitting voluntary control of movement. The autonomic nervous system has to do with the sensory impulses that originate
from the heart and all other organs in the abdomen and pelvis and travel to the brain (Streeten). Furthermore, the autonomic nervous system regulates homeostasis (Bakewell). The autonomic system is
primary concerned with transmitting impulses from the central nervous system to peripheral organ systems (Bakewell). It is responsible for controlling the heart rate, which includes the force of "contraction, constriction
and dilatation of blood vessels," as well as the contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle in various organs (Bakewell). Further effects of the autonomic nervous system are pupillary size
(the contraction or expansion of the pupils), and secretions from exocrine and endocrine glands (Bakewell). As this indicates, the impulses that originate in the autonomic nervous system generally do not
