changes needed to be made on the domestic front. In his autobiography he tells the reader about many of his political involvements and his political choices. Of course, in an
autobiography that comes from a nations leader we are not likely to really get all the truths regarding political and social action as it relates to the individual citizens. With
that in mind the following paper examines one aspect of Roosevelts autobiography and discuss its relationship with the people through Roosevelts eyes and the eyes of the nation. The period
in American history to be discussed is the time of the Square Deal which occurs in Chapter XII of Roosevelts work. The Square Deal Chapter XII of Roosevelts autobiography
is titled "The Big Stick and the Square Deal." He opens this chapter by stating, "ONE of the vital questions with which as President I had to deal was the
attitude of the Nation toward the great corporations. Men who understand and practice the deep underlying philosophy of the Lincoln school of American political thought are necessarily Hamiltonian in their
belief in a strong and efficient National Government and Jeffersonian in their belief in the people as the ultimate authority, and in the welfare of the people as the end
of Government" (Roosevelt, 1913). In this we can see that the tension in the nation was perhaps that which involved freedom from government or reliance on government to solve all
