sex, and that their technique was to take the original and turn it around to reflect poorly on the first author. Discussion The writings by women that are of interest
here are all reactions to insulting works by men. That could imply that women could not publish original works on their own, but answers to other works were acceptable. It
also appears that in each case, the answering work plays on the original, turning the words back on the first author to belittle him. In an answer to a publication
known as Surfeit, an attack on women, a woman named "Jane Anger" launched a counterattack, calling the original author a "surfeiting lover" and describes the plight of women everywhere: they
are objects of desire for men whether they wish it or not or whether they do anything to entice men or not. She says, for example, "our eyes cause them
to look lasciviously; why? because they are given to lechery" (Anger). This is nothing more or less than the "boys will be boys" excuse that has been given for centuries
to justify mens boorish behavior. Ms. Anger (the name is clearly a pseudonym) is describing what women go through, and then asking why, instead of cataloging all the faults of
women, the author didnt hold his own sex up to scrutiny. "I would that ancient writers would as well have busted their heads about deciphering the deceits of their own
