is that the people in institutions are not necessarily sick but those who treat them might actually be. The narrator, Chief Bromden, is introduced in the first chapter but his
illness is not clearly diagnosed. He is an American Indian and so there is an implication that there is a cultural difference. To some extent, this may account for the
perception that he is schizophrenic. In Chapter four, one becomes aware that there are many different types of residents, some of whom will stay there indefinitely and some who
are there because there is really no other place in society for them at the moment. For example, at the time that this was written, gay men and lesbians were
considered to be mentally ill. Homosexuality was not considered a lifestyle choice and the thinking has changed a great deal within the psychiatric community since that time. Harding is
a character in the book who seems to be there only due to his homosexuality. He does not seem to be plagued with any true psychological disorder. Billy Bibbit, on
the other hand, is somewhat of a difficult case to diagnose. Symptoms include many fears. He is particularly afraid of his mother and kills himself in the end.
In Chapter 19, Sefelt who is considered to be one of the Acutes, is epileptic and has convulsions. The nurse blames this patient for avoiding his medication. As it turns
out, another epileptic has been doubling up on his own meds because he is in fear of having a seizure. In the end, it seems that Cuckoos Nest is comprised
of ordinary people with some physical and psychological ailments. There are also residents who have serious mental illnesses. Yet, the gist of the novel is that conventional psychology is problematic
