Introduction According to the Australian government, the business environed off in Australia is extraordinarily strong showing steady growth in both real and nominal terms facilitating an increasing level of the standard of living for Australians (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, 2007). With a business structure that is in line with other western countries; including patterns of liberalisation of trade and the principle of capitalism there is a strong foundation for business. The national business environment is in a constant state of change, the different pressures and influences move in response to a number of internal and external social, political and economic factors. The general environment will impact on all businesses within Australia, although different influences may have a greater significance in specific industries. National companies such as Telstra need to understand the general and commercial environment in order to adapt the strategies to survive and thrive. This paper will examine the business environment within Australia and then consider the position of Telstra. 2. Australia 2.1 Background and Context of the Australian Business Environment Australia is a large island with a population of 20,434,1761 mainly located within coastal areas due to the geographical and climate factors of the inland areas (CIA 2007). Population density is relatively low as the country has an area slightly less than 48 US contiguous states (CIA, 2007).
