when new vehicle sales in Australia surpassed the 1 million mark; this was an increase of 10.5% on 2009 and exceeded the industry forecasts (Deloitte, 2011). The sales for 2011
year to date up until the end of August were a total of 665,309 units (compared to 695,666 for the same period in 2010) (FCAI, 2011). However, despite the overall
lower level of sales for the year to date, the sales for August did show an increase with the months sales being 88,082 compared to 82,122 units in August 2010,
demonstrating a 7.3% increase on the same month the year before (FCAI, 2011, Roberts, 2011). The automotive industry in Australia is one of the few countries where as
well as looking at sales there are also production facilities which need to be included. Not all cards sold in the country are manufactured in Australia. As this is an
industry where some cars will be exported while others are imported. In June 2011 there were 2,088 units exported and 22,758 imported (DIISR, 2011). Looking at the production of
vehicles in Australia there are three main companies that have facilities in Australia; Ford Australia, Holden and Toyota as well as a number of small scale manufacturers such as Elfin,
Nota, Kratwerkz, Deuce Customs and G-Force. In 2010 the total production was 239,443 units, an increase of 6.72% on 2009 (FCAI, 2011). The year to date up until the end
of August 2011 saw production that totalled of 152,564 units (FCAI, 2011). The value of the automotive industry in Australia measured by turnover was $103.9 billion for December 2010
alone (VACC, 2010).For 2008 the total turnover was $45.5 billion for motor vehicle and parts wholesaling, and $69.2 billion for motor vehicle and parts retailing (VACC, 2010).
