with a great teacher. Discussion This is a subject that has no general consensus. Some people would consider a teacher great if he or she proves to be particularly inspiring;
others would consider it a great accomplishment if the teacher managed to civilize the students so that they stopped behaving like animals; still others would measure the teacher by how
many students met the "standards" while others would be more impressed by a teacher who always filled every class. Some opinions of what makes a teacher great come from other
teachers, and it might be helpful to listen to them first. A gentleman names Barnett Berry, who is president of the Center for Teaching Quality, says that great teachers have
to do more than simply help students to learn, they also have to share their expertise in their field (Young). Associate professor Mary Clement, who is a professor of teacher
education at Berry College in Georgia, and therefore presumably knows a lot about the subject, says that a great teacher "has five elements: education, teacher preparation, hiring, quality induction and
ongoing support" (Young 39). This is interesting and not what one might expect. The question would seem to suggest an answer to the effect that a great teacher is inspiring,
knowledgeable, dedicated and so on, but Clement seems to saying that most of all, a great teacher is well prepared and supported. That is, he or she has the requisite
education for the position; they are prepared; and they are supported by the institution where they are employed. The ideas of hiring and quality induction arent as clear, but would
seem to speak to the fact that great teachers are hired to teach subjects they know at institutions that are appropriate; and that when they get there, they are clearly
