In addition, mining in the 19th century created some changes to the topography that impacted the region as a whole. Physical Description/Landforms The Atacama Desert is a region in Northern Chile of about 140,600 square miles, which is bound on the west by a mountainous strip that abuts the Pacific coastline, and on the east by the Cordillera Domeyko, a range of foothills of the Andes Mountains (Climate, 2002). "The average width is less than 100 miles but it extends 600 miles south from the Peruvian border. The mountains nearest the ocean are the Pacific coastal range, with an average elevation of 2500 feet" (Climate, 2002). The arid nature of this desert climate is one of the primary factors influencing the physical elements and composition of the region. The desert extends from the thin coastal shelf abutting the Pacific Ocean to the pampas, seemingly lifeless plains that progress towards river gorges that are layered with mineral sediments that have come from the Andes Mountains (Vesilind, 2003). " The pampas bevel up to the altiplano, the foothills of the Andes, where alluvial salt pans give way to lofty white-capped volcanoes that march along the continental divide, reaching 20,000 feet" (Vesilind, 2003). The center of the Atacama Desert is what climatologists describe as "absolute desert" and as a result, the Atacama has been deemed the driest desert on Earth.
