According to theorists, there are two types of conspiracies - real and dubious. In a real conspiracy, there are a fixed group of members, an actual hierarchy structure
consisting of a leader and subordinates, and there is corroborating evidence of the conspiracy itself and direct links to the individuals involved. A dubious conspiracy is, on the other
hand, based more on speculation and supposition than on data that can be proven or somehow supported. Dubious conspiracies are ever expanding, based more on unknown quantities with no
traceable hierarchy, and often include mysterious figures that might or might not be connected. Interestingly, even though a conspiracy can be either real or dubious, the process of each
is exactly the same: "A chain of apparently unrelated events or actions is linked to reveal concerted actions and intentions to cause all sorts of social, economic, political, religious, and
moral problems" (Goldzwig 492). Well-known conspiracy theorist and author Daniel Pipes noted that within a real or imagined conspiracy there are distinctive patterns, which include "a penchant for the
obscure and improbable... accepting arguments pointing toward a conspiracy indiscriminately... and playing loose and fast with the facts" (Goldzwig 492). The assassination of Abraham Lincoln in April 1865 represents a
real conspiracy because it is comprised of a definitive hierarchy, with relationships of the participants established, and featured covert meetings designed to plan an illicit act. Furthermore, it can
