A 5 page paper discussing the events that led to the onset of the Asian currency crisis of 1997, and then those events and conditions that preserved it for longer than it should have lasted. In 1998, currency matters improved throughout much of ASEAN with the exception of Malaysia, where the crisis began. The crisis hung on until Japan finally acted, but then the situation began to ease. All were affected by the Asian currency crisis, and others found that the fiscal systems that were sufficient in the past had lost their relevancy in the age of globalization. There have been changes in recent years, but those changes appear to help ensure the regions continued economic growth in the future. Origins of the Crisis The entire region of Southeast Asia had been growing in dramatic terms throughout the entire decade of the 1990s, and Singapore had won the most benefit. That nation instituted the first of a series of five-year economic growth plans in 1960, devising for itself a systematic plan to lift its people out of abject poverty. By the mid-1990s, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) listed Singapore as an officially mature economy (Miyakie and Thomsen). All of the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a regional trade alliance, had benefited from the rapid growth of foreign direct investment (FDI) and rapid changes within the computer hardware industry throughout the 1990s. A high percentage of the worlds semiconductors were manufactured in and around Singapore, and all those nations involved in that industry prospered well as computer hardware advanced quickly in other areas of the world. In the US, a PC was considered "old" at less than one year of service as Intel in particular rapid-fired enhancements in its Pentium(r) line into the PC marketplace.
