For many Africans,
tribal identity has always been more important than national identity. The national boundaries which exist today are those which were imposed by Europeans during the era of colonisation, and in
many cases bear little resemblance to the actual distribution of tribal nations. In some regions tribes are separated into different nations, whereas in others there are several different tribes trying
to co-exist under one national identity.
The Ashanti live in the region which is now Ghana, in the West African tropical rain forest. The kingdom was originally founded by King Osei
Tutu in the 1700s and although the kingdom was deep in the forest it was able to extent towards the areas occupied by the Europeans on the southern coast and
into the drier regions in the north.
The capital of the Ashanti kingdom, Kumasi, was taken by the British in 1873 and the kingdom became a British protectorate at the start
of the twentieth century, later being incorporated into the Gold Coast. In the 1950s the region achieved independence under Nkrumah: there have been some social and cultural changes in the
succeeding period, including a shift from agriculture to a more urban economy.
