The author wrote about love and lust and coming out in the world, but when the Nazis would confiscate and burn literature, The Artificial Silk Girl purportedly went through some
revision to keep in line with the Nazi perspective. At least, that is what some reviewers have noted. This is unfortunate. In any event, the story of Doris lives on.
While the political insights are not gleaned through a study of Doris, it does help to know what takes place early in the novel. Prior to World War II,
things were rather restrained in Germany. Doris, the protagonist is just eighteen. At the time, unlike the eighteen year old girls of today who are just getting driver licenses and
hardly have any responsibility, Doris is fully grown. Yes, immature as young people are, she is no baby and has a heightened sexuality, something that is a focal point of
the story. The work is about the coming of age of this young girl who finds herself entrenched in the prostitution business. The book begs the reader to ask, how
did this happen? How did Doris go from being a girl with dreams to one who sells her body, and perhaps her soul, for cash? Throughout the work, the theme
of money is inherent. She gets a job as an office worker. She wants to be on stage and does so, but not so much for the money. It seems
that Doris really wants to perform, but her performance does not make her rich and underneath it all she is looking for a rich man. The fact that in the
