idea of controlling this deadly force has become one of the most important issues in America. The Long Island Rail Road shooting that prompted a housewife to go to Washington and the Columbine incident that instilled fear into every parent in America, makes for not only heated, but emotional debates. The issue, while intense, is only secondary to the art of persuasion. In fact, no matter what side one takes, it is the art of convincing that is more relevant than the actual points made. To further illustrate that assumption, several articles on gun control will be evaluated. In examining articles on gun control for elements of persuasion, four will be used by the authors Franken, Snyder, Ellison, and Will. In carefully explicating these essays, it is important for a student examining these works to look at them in terms of Ranks model of persuasion, thus accounting for tactics such as omission, diversion and confusion. Also, in utilizing that paradigm for analysis, a student will want to point out evidence of repetition, association and competition. In examining the four articles, it is important to pull out the important components of each. For Snyders, his statement:" We permit and encourage it because we do not fight back, immediately, then and there, where it happens" (Snyder PG) is the crux of his thesis. In a sense, he uses the tactic of diversion because he essentially blames the victim. It is a rather unusual technique and not very persuasive. While in some way people will understand the point to mean that all should be responsible for their own fate, and own a gun, many will reject the notion that anything is their fault.
