would redefine the employment of color for future generations of artists. According to Phillips, "His use of color to establish the excitement and tension that powered many of his
mundane, traditional subjects into strong, personal experiences" (Phillips, 1993, p. 20). The work of Henri Matisse would encompass several art forms but it would be his uniquely original interpretation
of these styles that would thereafter leave his own indelible brushstroke on them. Born on New Years Eve 1869 at Le Cateau-Cambr?sis to trade weavers Henri-Emile Beno?t and Anna H?lo?se,
it was the rich colorful tapestries that first caught Matisses youthful eye and would leave a lasting impression on his creative imagination (Clement, 1993). However, it wasnt until Matisse,
who was studying to become a lawyer, was bedridden with appendicitis that he would become seduced by the painting that would become his most enduring passion (Clement, 1993). The
works he produced between 1896 and 1898 were heavily influenced by such Impressionist painters as Edouard Manet, but would claim, "A painter is all there in his first pictures" (Phillips,
1993, p. 20). Although his early works are regarded as nothing particularly extraordinary, they do exhibit the basic structure that would characterize Matisses greatest artworks (Phillips, 1993). After
