that surrounds the modern perception of the conductors role? Could the orchestra produce the same quality of sound without the benefit of a conductor? According to author Norman Lebrecht, the
mythos surrounding the conductor is that it takes a "god-like intermediary" to bring forth the music from the assembled musicians that make up a symphony orchestra (Hodgson, 1999, p. 77).
A conductor is viewed as someone who is typically a "despot, sexually voracious" and "power-obsessed" (p. 77). In addition to this, in order to fit the conventional image, he
is suppose to be as fit as a marathon runner" (p. 77). One never?ever?sees an overweight conductor, or a woman on the podium, for that matter (Hodgson, 1999). Women
