first glance the artwork of Fernando Botero and Peter Paul Rubens are very different. Botero, a modern painter, uses vivid almost tropical color and presents his images with an almost
comical flair. In the case of Rubens one can note his almost mythical and romantic naked women who were anything but skinny, thus the popular term of calling a shapely
woman Rubenesque. But, there also appear to be some similarities, especially when one learns that Botero was very much influenced by the work of Rubens. The following paper examines art
from both artists and compares their work. (It should be noted that information about the original sizes of the Botero paintings were not found. The student should be able to
locate this information in their text book). The Art of Botero and Rubens The first painting to be examined is Colombiana.
This is an incredibly rich and colorful painting of a woman. She is incredibly round and shapely, almost in a comical way such as one would see in a comic
strip of some kind. At the same time there is a very deep seriousness and realness to the womans face. It is modern, and clearly modern in comparison to anything
by Rubens, but there is also something powerfully classic about it despite its almost tropical hues. Her face is deep and rich with the roundness of the shape.
