his notes and thoughts and lectures in a work called "The Art Spirit." In this book he does not necessarily teach in the traditional manner of a book, for
it is not a book that is really meant to be read from cover to cover. His work is actually quite random and perhaps better termed as a book filled
with ideas, tips, and perspectives. The following paper examines, or summarizes, his book and then discussing painting techniques presented and one of his students George Bellows. The Art Spirit
As noted, this work is really a compilation of ideas, notes, lectures, and perspectives that were possessed by Robert Henri. As such it is not necessarily a work that can
be definitively summarized. His work offers up many different ideas, the perspectives of Henri in regards to what he has learned, and essentially a work that can help a fellow
artist feel inspired and understood. One of the most powerful quotes from the book perhaps helps us see much of this as Henri states the following "If you want to
know how to do a thing you must first have a complete desire to do that thing. Then go to kindred spirits-others who have wanted to do that thing- and
study their ways and means, learn from their successes and failures and add your quota. Thus you may acquire from the experience of the race" (55). These are powerful words
in that they convey an image of what it is to be an artist in many ways. It illustrates, to the reader, that an artist has, if nothing else, a
desire. That desire can take an artist almost anywhere if they truly wish to express themselves in one aspect of art or another. In essence, his entire work, in brief
