The Wisdom of the Desert as translated by Father Thomas Merton both focus on victory against an adversary. This is the major theme of both books. The secondary theme of
both is resolving conflict. They each approach the themes in a different manner, using different philosophical foundations. Tzus book is based primarily on Taoist philosophy while Mertons translation is based
on early Christian beliefs. To understand the messages in these two books, one must have a certain amount of background and understanding of the Taoist philosophy and of Judeo-Christian philosophy.
Taoism was founded by Lao-Tse , who lived between the years 604 and 531 BC; the philosophy is based on the concept of Tao, or the Way, specifically, the Way
of Life, which promotes a harmonious existence (Robinson, 2002). Lao-Tse is said to have been looking for an alternative to the consistent feudal wars and other kinds of conflicts
one finds in everyday life (Finney nd). Taoism is about the way things are and the way all of life is constituted. The tenets of Taoism are clearly outlined in
the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tse. Taoism has been one of the two primary governors of Chinese thought from antiquity; the other primary governor is Confucianism (Robinson, 2002). Taoism
has a great deal in common with other religious beliefs, such as certain aspects found in Christianity. The most common symbol of Taoism is the circular Yin-Yang, which represents the
balance of opposites in the world. Taoism is also based on the "Five Agents: of wood, metal, fire, water and earth (Finney nd). Five Agents" (metal, wood, water, fire &
