IS TO ENGAGE IN THE CLOSE COMBAT, DIRECT FIRE BATTLE" ("US Army Ranger School," 2007). The Army Rangers are trained for the serious battles of war. The Army Ranger
program is a part of the Special Operations Units of the United States military (Smith, 2003). Candidates for the Rangers must have stamina, possess intelligence and mental toughness as well
as to be able to endure a great deal (Smith, 2003). When one who is accepted and meets the requirements of the Ranger program, the training takes place in three
stages which are the "Fort Benning Phase, Mountain Phase, and Florida Phase" (Smith, 2003). The Benning Phase lasts for twenty days and is provided in two parts (Smith, 2003).
The first stage is rather physical and requires the passage of a fitness test which includes at least 59 sit ups, 49 push ups and just 6 chin ups (Smith,
2003). A two mile run must be done in 15 minutes and twelve seconds, or less (Smith, 2003). Clearly, the requirements are very strict. Of course, there are more tests
and requirements which include the completion of five mile runs, a combat water test, an obstacle course run and a sixteen mile march (Smith, 2003). Day and night land navigation
testing is also a part of the model (Smith, 2003). Of course, those listed times and requirements are the bare minimum. Smith (2003) suggests: "To be competitive in any of
