are unlike any other organizations in the world. Although police and fire departments are called "paramilitary," the actual military is a world unto itself. Military personnel follow rigid codes of
conduct, depend on one another for their very lives, and are trusted, at a very early age, with extraordinary responsibilities. Where else would a young person in their teens be
given a rifle and be expected to learn to use it in the most stressful situation of all, combat? This paper discusses what it means to be [part of this
organization as a non-commissioned officer (NCO), the standards NCOs meet and why it is important to uphold them. Discussion Non-commissioned officers (NCOs) are considered to be the backbone of the
services. Commissioned and warrant officers are housed separately from the troops and may not be privy to the problems and concerns that arise within the ranks. But NCOs live with
their troops and care for them; in fact, their first duty is to see to the welfare of those under their command. They share all the same hardships and dangers
that their troops undergo, and as such are much closer to them than those of higher rank. Knowing this, officers and warrant officers have come to depend on the NCOs,
not only to take care of the troops, but also to keep them informed of potential problems before they arise. Thus, the NCO has a position of great responsibility.
