provided, but the single most useful source for basic information about the test was the test website itself. A section of the website is provided specifically for researchers and includes
information such as norming information, validity information and other measures of the tests reliability. It provides a significant amount of information for the paper. General Information: The test is called
the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery or ASVAB; it is constantly revised by the Department of Defense and new versions are distributed frequently. Test Description: The purpose of the test
was originally to help the armed forces identify the skills of new recruits so that they would be assigned to the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) for which they were best
suited. The test is still used for that purpose today; however, it is also available to high school students who wish to use it to help narrow down possible career
choices (Baker, 2002). Baker estimates that between 800,000 - 900,000 students take the test each year, in some 14,000 high schools across the United States (2002). The Department of Defense
makes the test materials and associated content available at no cost (Baker, 2002). Content: The test measures various types of ability in nine "subtests," as follows: General Science (GS), Arithmetic
Reasoning (AR), Word Knowledge (WK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), Mathematics Knowledge (MK), Electronics Information (EI), Auto and Shop Information (AS), Mechanical Comprehension (MC) and Assembling Objects (AO) (What to expect when
you take the ASVAB). Each subtest has a certain number of questions and a time limit; for example, there are 25 general science questions with a time limit of 11
