generate some degree of controversy. One of the most controversial of all such issues is the ongoing discourse surrounding the right of homosexual couples to be married. To date, only
a select few states acknowledge the right of same sex couples to marry, and even these states undergo a great deal of criticism from opponents of gay marriage. However, there
are many compelling arguments as for why gay marriage would bring a number of benefits to society. Before coming to a decision on such divisive topics, one should be careful
to examine both sides of the issue, and then approach a solution which builds upon the common ground shared by both sides. This paragraph helps the student begin to
address the various arguments on the issue of gay marriage. The most potent argument for gay marriage is simply that, to deny gay couples the right to marry is a
direct violation of their civil rights. Certainly, traditional married couples are able to enjoy a number of legal and financial benefits as a result of their status, including lower insurance
rates, shared pension and retirement benefits, as well as tax breaks. These are all societal perks that gay couples are barred from as the result of a ban on gay
marriage, and for many this is simply unfair. More fundamental, however, are the arguments that banning gay marriage violates the most foundational rights of all, the rights to "life, liberty,
and the pursuit of happiness" set forth in the Declaration of Independence (Sullivan 2011, p. 12). On multiple occasions, the United States Supreme Court has "upheld the right to marry
for everyone, citizen or even traveler, as a core, inalienable right", asserting that "even political rights, like the right to vote, and nearly all other rights enumerated in the Constitution,
