is a logical position and is generally supported by the conservative camp. But the other side suggests a progressive tax. That is, the wealthy should pay more. That makes sense
too. Further, the idea that the poor should be able to keep what they earn, and that very wealthy people do not need so much money, is the better moral
choice. Yes, an across the board percentage is fair in some respects, but when one considers their moral obligation to society, progressive taxation is the only answer. Why is this
the case? An argument that supports taxation, as well as progressive taxation, is as follows: "It follows that a government whose responsibility is to promote the autonomy of its citizens
is entitled to redistribute resources, to provide public goods and engage in the provision of other services on a compulsory basis, provided its laws merely reflect and concretize autonomy-based duties
of its citizens" (Coban, 2004, p.111). Here, the idea that government has the right to tax is made, and because the government has the right to tax to provide benefits
for the people, it further has the right to create an appropriate tax structure which will be the most beneficial to all of the people. For many individuals, the idea
that resources should be redistributed, and that the very wealthy should be made to share is common sense. Why should someone starve to death from hunger on the same street
as someone who is eating a steak dinner in a restaurant? The idea that wealth is not shared is absurd. This notion does not mean that communism is the only
answer. Capitalism can nicely coexist with a moral theory that rules society and demands that the poor be given resources. The only way, or the best way, to accomplish this
