but the ones that are most familiar to Western readers are the ones that take place in the Middle East; stories like "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" and the
voyages of Sinbad. This paper discusses several of the stories and what they tell us about the people who would have listened to them. Discussion The first story is that
of King Shahrayar and Shahrazad, and is the "framing" device that contains the other stories. King Shahrayars wife betrayed him, and he was so furious that he killed her and
her lover; furthermore, he slew all the concubines of his court and their servants, many of whom were their lovers (Burton, 1985). After that, he was so incensed by the
treachery of women that he married a virgin every night, took her maidenhead, and then killed her the next morning, saying it was the only way he knew that she
would be faithful to him (Burton, 1985). This went on for three years, until the women of the city were either dead or had run away to save their lives
(Burton, 1985). But the Kings Wazir had two daughters, Shahrazad and Dunyazad; Shahrazad asked her father to give her to the king (Burton, 1985). He tried to talk her
out of it, but she insisted, and thus began the thousand nights, for each night she would end her story in a crucial place so the king wouldnt kill her
the next morning, but instead insisted she finish the tale (Burton, 1985). By the time the 1,001 nights were over, the king was truly in love with her and they
were happy (Burton, 1985). This is the story that is the introduction to most of the others, which are then told to the king (and the reader) by Shahrazad. The
