There are applications or both good and poor practices which have motivated and de-motivated the employees in line with general motivation theory. To consider this we will look at the
basics of motivational theory and applying them to the case of Delta to examine the way in which the company has performed in the context of the theories. After looking
at the actual position the second part of the paper and then hypothesise if some motivational theories that are currently not utilised by Delta were introduced.
When discussing the application of motivation theory the starting point is that of Taylor and scientific management. In the majority of cases scientific management is seen with
in manufacturing environments, but it is a model which may be seen in many other industries. The key characteristics are the lack of control by the employees and a low
trust environment. This can be compared to the human relations school of thought, based on work by Mayo and unlawful studies, and later developed by theorists such as Maslow and
Hertzberg who demonstrated employees did not just work for money; they were psychological factors that needed to be satisfied in order for employees to be motivated (Huczyniski and Buchanan, 2003).
The Hawthorn studies undertaken by Mayo demonstrated that the employment relationship was important when it came to motivating employees. The Hawthorn studies
looked at a group of workers who were placed in marginally improved working condition, this group of people demonstrated an increase in productivity. This starts to give credence to the
view that working condition have a direct impact on productivity. However, the studies would also show that when the study group suffered a decline in working condition their productivity still
