and a half million and two point seven million people die each year from the disease (1). Malaria is most prevalent in the developing countries due to both the economic and the geographical situation. With the development of GIS technology there has been a great leap forward to monitor and use geographical data to help reduce the incidence of malaria (2). This paper will consider the potential of GIS in terms of eliminating malaria. Long before the link between mosquitoes and malaria was know there was already an understanding of the spatial clustering and the link between the disease and the environment (3). An example of the way malaria was controlled using the understanding of the environmental impact is seen in the Italian 1809 anti-malaria regulation which specified the need for irrigated land located at least 8 kilometres from the capital city and at least 500 meters from general housing (4). There was the realisation of the link between locations and the disease. This link, today, is known and the locations in which malaria occur are known. Malaria occurs across areas of sub tropical and tropical climate where mosquitoes are found. This is shown in figure 1 Figure 1 Malaria Regions Across the Globe (5) With the link between the mosquitoes and malaria the main form of control has been to eliminate the Anopheles mosquitoes that carry the disease, ensuring they are not near areas of human habitation. The methods of keeping the mosquitoes and humans apart have used simple tools such as screens and larger elimination programmes (4). The ability to eliminate the mosquitoes effectively relied on the collection of data regarding the location of the breeding sites so that they could be eradicated to prevent the spread of the disease. The use of pesticides ...
