be used in both types of change. Theories regarding change in a crisis may also be applied to non-crisis circumstances. Complexity theory argues that the use of a linear
cause and effect model is an over simplification, so it may not be an effective basis for change management (Paraskevas, 2006). Organisations are complex systems, with many different influences that
all interact; the outcome of these complex interactions can be unpredictable. Furthermore, the nature of an organisation is one of constant change, even exchanged a small, due to these interactions
creating an evolutionary environment (Paraskevas, 2006). While the emphasis is on crisis management, this context helps to identify the way in which change may take place in a organisation, and
how internal influences such as organisational subsystems, as well as external influences from the macro environment may all impact on simple aspects within a firm. This increases the level of
uncertainty in any situation. Therefore, in this situation where changes being implemented, which is inevitably involves increasing the complexity the organisation and exerting more forces, the potential for interaction of
different influences to result in unexpected consequences increases. However, as noted by Pearson and Clair (1998) the unexpected consequences should be seen as that, simply unexpected outcomes, rather than interpreted
as failure, this will help to create a greater propensity for learning. Paraskevas (2006) looks at crisis in terms of crisis management in response, it is argued that there is
a need to develop a crisis culture, where there is flexibility within the approach to deal with different issues, and managers are able to act on their own initiative, using
their own knowledge and experience. The same boat approach may be adopted will change, if there is the potential to be unexpected changes, the development of a change culture and
