This paper describes why Islam is so popular and has such wide appeal; within this larger framework it discusses how Islam developed in the past and continues to develop today. It also touches on the growth of political and militant Islam in the past century and answers the question "Who speaks for Islam?" Discussion Islam is growing rapidly while in the U.S., church attendance in mainstream denominations is falling though gains are being made in fundamentalist sects. One question we can try to answer is why, since Islam is considered one of the three mainstream world religions, it is becoming more popular while Christianity in particular seems less relevant than ever before. Also, while this paper touches on militant Islam, it doesnt focus its attention there, nor is it helpful if America as a nation looks at only one aspect of the Islamic faith and ignores the rest. Perhaps the best place to start is with the book Heavy Metal Islam, a wonderful title that probably has readers wondering "is he serious with that title?" Well, yes, he is, and it will no doubt surprise many Westerners to discover that rock music, heavy metal in particular, is extremely popular throughout the Islamic world. Not only do young people like to listen to it, they are forming bands of their own and playing it.
