occur in isolation, but rather has some impact, even if only a small one, on events all around the rest of the world. The ability to perceive ones place in
history depends to a large extent upon ones ability to perceive how important historical events have affected ones life, even if they occurred long before one was born. This paper
will explore the concept of how events from the 1960s, in particular those related to the Apollo space program and the moon landing that occurred in 1969, would go on
to shape my own life, growing up and choosing a career in environmental science in the early 21st century. To begin with, one must understand that the 1960s represents a
pivotal era in United States history. Taken as a whole, the decade was something of a backlash against the predominant conservatism of the 1950s and preceding decades, as numerous social
and political factors converged that set many young people on an ideological path totally contradictory to the expectations of their society; a true counterculture. For instance, the dominance of the
Cold War affected many aspects of the 1960s; it was responsible for the start of the Vietnam War, which eventually resulted in half a million young people being deployed to
fight an ideologically driven conflict in Southeast Asia. At the same time, however, the Cold War was also responsible for the technological race between Russia and the United States to
