It is thought that the first Native American settlers came from the area which is now known as Siberia, and migrated across the continent: there have been archaeological discoveries made which date back around 13,000 years, but some experts think that recent finds may indicate a much earlier date. The first migrants were originally nomadic, and lived by hunting and fishing; they diversified into many different climatic regions and separated into a number of discrete societies, each with its own distinctive culture and language. As these tribal nations became less nomadic and more settled in their chosen regions, they became more inclined towards agriculture as the main means of subsistence and were the first people to cultivate a number of crops which are widespread today, such as corn, potatoes and manioc.
