comprised of dualistic forces - a balance of yin and yang, which must be maintained in order to achieve harmony. The West expresses it a bit differently, "Opposites attract."
In Nikos Kazantzakis 1946 novel, Zorba the Greek, he explores the relationship between two male polar opposites. The narrator is a cultured Englishman who has spent most of
his life sequestered in a safe world of books. Zorba, the bon vivant he hires initially to be his chef, then traveling companion, and ultimately becomes his most profound
teacher in the lessons of life. The novels dual protagonists, Zorba and the narrator, could not be any more different, and yet they discover that each needs the other.
Separately, their respective characters are somewhat lacking, but together, they offer a sense of completion that they would not have otherwise. Nevertheless, there are always conflicting forces at
work, which represent the dynamic of both the novel and the relationship between the two protagonists. They include such philosophical oppositions as action vs. inaction, doer vs. writer and
philosopher, and primitivism vs. modernism. The erudite English narrator of Zorba the Greek, has spent most of his life sitting in a comfortable chair, thumbing through a favorite book.
For him, action is the description of his cherished art form, not of his life. If anything, the narrator has done everything within his power to remain inactive, as
