and reporting of history. The journal changed its name several times and is now called "Annales. Histoire, Sciences Sociales" (WorldLingo Translations, 2011). The Annales School was founded in 1928
by March Bloch and Lucien Febvre. At the time, they were both university history instructors. Its purpose was to change the way history is recorded and reported. It was a
very innovative idea that was nearly the opposite of the way history was considered at that time. Rather than discussing linear events, the scholars associated with Annales considered the human
element in history (Generation Online, 2011). The Annales approach is described as incorporating geography, history and sociological approaches I its study (WorldLingo Translations, 2011). Its approach is sometimes thought to
be a form of structural situationism (Generation Online, 2011). The movement had begun in 1920. It was initially viewed as subversive and radical because it went against the tradition of
focusing on political history. By 1945, it changed to a way of thought. Its method was to look at how history changes over a long period of time. The
focus was on the socio-economic. Braudel and Labrousse led this change. By 1968, the school had become more fragmented and the focus changed to one that emphasized the socio-cultural aspects
of history. This change was led by Ariel, Bourdieau and Goffman (Generation Online, 2011). When Bloch was killed in World War II by the Gestapo for participating in the
French Resistance, Febvre carried on by himself. He was joined by many other like-minded scholars, some of whom were just mentioned. Febvre mentored Fernand Braudel who would become a strong
proponent for Annales and would even work for the school. Braudels work is referred to as the second era of Annales. He came up with the idea that history changes
