fact that he is so murderous, and so forthright about it, that makes him attractive to us; theres something engaging about a villain who admits his faults and even revels
in them. But finally we turn against him as we must, for his crimes become so egregious there is no excuse. He manages to fool many of the other characters
in the play as well, but as events unfold they begin to describe him in animalistic terms. This paper discusses three characters who describe Richard as some sort of animal,
and why the comparison is important in each case. Discussion One of the first to turn against him is Lady Anne, widow of Edward, Prince of Wales. Her hate is
understandable since it was Richard who killed her husband. But he, in a stunning move of sheer bravado, claims that he killed the man because Anne drove him to it:
he loves her so much he had to get rid of Edward so that she would be free to marry him! Her reply is not what he hoped for: she
spits at him, and when he asks why, she says she wishes it were poison. He replies, "Never came poison from so sweet a place" (I.ii.146). And she answers, "Never
hung poison on a fouler toad. Out of my sight, thou dost infect mine eyes!" (I.ii.147-148). She also, earlier in the scene, refers to him as a "hedgehog" (I.ii.103).
The hedgehog allusion may be to Richards badge which is a wild boar, but the reference to the toad is vicious, and completely deserved. She may be referring to his
hunched back, which gives him a toad-like appearance. But there are such things as poisonous toads, and she could be referring to the fact that everywhere he goes, people die.
