addition to historical texts. The following paper offers a generalized look at the work. The Ancient City Coulanges work is divided up into various sections that deal with
different aspects of the life, overall, of the Greeks and the Romans. The first section deals with the ancient beliefs of the people. In one chapter of this first section
it is noted that, "It was also a religious precept that this fire must always remain pure...which meant, literally, that no filthy object ought to be cast into it" (Coulanges,
1980; 16). Throughout this first section the reader is made aware of the simplest, but most intriguing of facts such as this that really establishes a foundation for understanding
the ways of the people. It is through this relatively simple, and yet minutely detailed, look at beliefs that the reader sees more than their belief in gods. The
author then moves on to illustrating the family life of the Greeks and Romans. Coulanges indicates how "Religion was the constituent principle of the ancient family" in the first chapter
of this section. He looks at marriage practices, such as how the "As a daughter, she took part in the religious acts of her father; as a wife, in those
of her husband" (Coulanges, 1980; 33). He illustrates how the ancient people, in relationship to marriage, perhaps altered for the woman in that she was required to essentially take up
