the people if barbarian Europe. The theme of this book is an exhaustive exploration of these peoples and their lifeways, an exploration conducted both through a detailed look at
the archaeology of the people and the time and of the various descriptions provided by ancient Greek and Roman writers. "The Ancient Celts" falls into the large genre of
world history but it stands distinct in the detail that is provided and the specifics of where those details were acquired. Cunliffes intended audience encompasses academic and lay readers
alike. His thesis is simply that the Celts were a much more complex culture than can be described by an analysis of either archaeology or classic writings alone.
Cunliffe recognized that neither archaeology nor textual accounts alone were sufficient to describe the ancient Celts as best as they could be
described. Those that wrote about these people during their time only encountered them sporadically and usually as a part of their war time ventures. They caught brief glimpses
of their industries and their personalities but these views were certainly lacking in terms of detail. The archaeological record, in contrast, provides the details that are lacking in the
classical accounts of the Celts. Cunliffe wrote "The Ancient Celts" with the full intent of merging the two monochromatic views together to present
the Celts in full color. To accomplish that purpose to the best degree possible, he chose to merge the information that could be gleaned from the two. While
others have attempted just such a feat, none have done it as adequately as Cunliffe. Cunliffe was motivated to write
