For much of our history the US has regarded itself as being exceptional to one extent or another when compared to other countries (DSouza 161). This view
is certainly not surprising nor is it necessarily counterproductive. We are, after all, a relatively new advent on the world scene. We had values that differed from those
of our mother country and we took the steps to take control of our own destiny. Our view of ourselves as exceptional is thus well grounded. Recognizing this,
we have suggested through much of our history that others follow our model. On a more unfortunate note, however, our exceptionalist attitude has garnered significant criticism from others in
the world who ridicule the idea that they should follow the so-called American model (DSouza 161). For some the criticism overspills into hatred. Not mincing any words, Mendietta
(435) observes that not only do many people around the world dislike Americans "they hate them with such passion that they will resort to any means to vent their hate".
Americans are thus left floundering in confusion. How can we have had such persistently high views of ourselves when in reality the rest of the world had all
