The Revolutionary War marked a time of many changes in American culture. As proudly as we
remember the war, we must also remember that not everyone in the colonies were in support of it. If that had been the case, after all, there would have
been no war. Many supporters feared that the Revolution would threaten existing social hierarchies and unleash social disorder. Their fears were certainly not without basis. That did,
in fact, occur during this time period and it affected all segments of the American populace. In retrospect it is not
surprising that many in the Americas remained loyal to the Crown or, more specifically, loyal to the reign of King George III during the revolutionary era. Americans still had
many ties to the mother country and we continued to look to her for support. These people were dubbed "Loyalists" or the more derogatory term "Tories". They considered
themselves politically conservative and revolution to them was a preposterous concept in the Americas. Interestingly, as Bailyn et. al. (1977) observes, many loyalists occupied the upper societal echelon of
the colonies. They were the wealthy and the influential and they deeply believed in maintaining the connection between the colonies and the mother country (Bailyn et. al., 1977).
