a method of punishment for violating the laws of the land (Nielson, 2010). Once a criminal is in prison, the system attempts to rehabilitate them and to resocialize them by
changing their attitudes, character, and behaviors (Nielson, 2010). The conditions of the American prison system depend on the specific prison as well as the state in which that prison is
located. It also depend on the type of prison, e.g., state prison versus federal prison. One thing that is well-known is that American prisons are overcrowded. Everyone who listens to
the news on a regular basis know this. A study by the Pew Center (2010) reported that the state prison population declined in 2010 for the first time in 40
years. The total number of prisoners increased due to significant increases in the numbers of prisoners in federal prisons. At the beginning of 2010, there were 1,404,053 people in state
prisons which was 4,777 fewer than in 2008 and there were 208,118 prisoners in federal prisons (Pew Center, 2010). In 2008, one in every 100 adults were behind bars
(Pew Center, 2010). Some reporters have argued that the conditions in American prisons are worse than conditions at Guantanamo Bay (Eviatar, 2009). This reporter provided this example-one of the worst
prisoners at Guantanamo is allowed to sit outside in the sun and interact with other prisoners through a chain-link fence for four hours every day with prisoners in the neighboring
exercise yard (Eviatar, 2009). Prisoners in maximum security prisons in America are kept in isolation for as many as 23 hours per day with an hour in the exercise
