the past, anti-American sentiments and actions have played an important but episodic role in Saudi politics and foreign relations. The oil embargo of 1973-74 is the outstanding example. But since
the end of the Cold War, anti-Americanism in word and deed has become one of the central features of the Saudi political landscape." One can see that political action taken
by America, not only towards Saudi Arabia but in the region as well, has had an influence. In fact, there is much disdain for America because of past actions.
As the Saudi people see it, American politics had affected their country, so there is a tension that arises. There does seem to be a negative political effect. Another influence
that America had on Saudi Arabia is in terms of how women are treated. During a military action, American soldiers were sent over, but it was the female soldiers who
were feared. Zeinert (2005) explains: "Saudi leaders, fearing the influence American women might have on their nations women, did not want them to enter the country" (p.26). In general, Saudi
women are not allowed out without chaperones and are required to keep their entire bodies covered when in public (Zeinert, 2005). This is very different than what American women are
used to experiencing. Hence, there had been a fear of Americans because of their liberal view of women. However, the exposure has to some extent seen the empowerment of women
in the Middle East. Of course, it is a misnomer to think that Islam is responsible for the oppression of women in these countries and there is a movement to
see freedom for women in Saudi Arabia and other nations. While there are rules in Saudi Arabia, it is also the case that Muslim women are often misunderstood. They are
