keeps the capitalistic system alive and thriving. It is perhaps not so much the individuals, but the families, that purchase the most products and truly adhere to the consumerism life.
The following paper examines some of the relationships between the contemporary American family and the economic system of industrial capitalism. The American Family and the Economy First off
it is perhaps important to define what contemporary family means when speaking of their relationship with the economy. When we speak of contemporary families in America we are not talking
about retired couples nor are we talking about impoverished families. The contemporary family in the United States is a family with children where, more than likely, both parents work. The
family will perhaps own a home and at least two cars. They may have retirement accounts and may well vacation on a yearly basis. They own computers, televisions, stereos and
are essentially one of the largest groups of consumers in the nation. As such they are often the target for new products and also the target for much of any
sort of media coverage, be it news or advertisements. In looking at the subject from the other component, capitalism is an economic system that all but relies on consumers.
It is a system that insists that those with money drive the economy in one direction or another. This is not to say that those with money are always those
with a great deal of money, but rather those who do the average spending, purchasing from a middle class, and upper middle class, position in the economy. As such it
is the middle class, the contemporary citizens, who ultimately control where an economy goes. With some basis foundations of the subject matter in hand we look now at a
