that involved being a hard working and honorable individual, elements that would lead to personal success and not necessarily economic success or wealth. But, as times changed the focus of
the American Dream altered, primarily in the 1920s, to a dream that involved financial success and wealth and perhaps fame as well. The novel Devil in a Blue Dress by
Walter Mosley is an excellent novel that illustrates the simplicity of the American Dream for many. It is a novel that, although a detective novel, examines one mans desire to
have a simple, perhaps middle-class, life with a house and sense of stability in terms of knowing a paycheck is coming in. It is a novel that illustrates the simple
American Dream of many. The American Dream and Devil in a Blue Dress According to one author "Few will deny that Americans are intently focused on the almighty
dollar" and that at the bottom of this lies the common belief that the American Dream always involves money (Warshauer). In the United States there is a joke that states
that "the one who dies with the most toys wins" which is illustrative of the desire so many people have to own the best house, the best most expensive car,
and all the other fun material possessions that prove they are successful and worth envy (Warshauer). In the case of Moselys novel the main character is not such
