Dan Rather, a beloved CBS news anchor, is one of the most recognizable faces in America. His recent book, "The American Dream", is a
print version of a news hour feature CBS first introduced in 1999. That feature was proposed by Rather himself and it was intended "to discover what, if anything the
dream means to todays Americans" (Rather, 2000). The feature ran for over a year and included interviews from hundreds of normal everyday Americans. By all accounts, however, some
of these Americans in truth verged on the extraordinary. Rathers book came about at the end of that series and, in truth, delves more deeply into the life of
several Americans that are in pursuit of the same dream that occupied those interviewed in the television series. Interviews include professional athletes, migrant workers, and political activist alike.
Most important, however, the interviews emphasize an inside look at America and the concepts that drive it. The book explores a concept that is dear to most of us,
the concept that with fortitude and perseverance anyone can achieve success in this country. All it takes, in fact, is hard work, dedication, and vision.
Rather bases his story on over thirty key interviews that he held over the years, interviews that shed light not just into Rathers views on life,
liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and on how to go about achieving it but interviews that illuminate the views and accomplishments of previously obscure men and women who have
