Some claim that gender, race and class affect individuals ability to achieve the American Dream; others say that because so many were able to find success in years past,
the same success attainable in the past is not possible for individuals today. Conventional wisdom was that hard work would always pay off,
but is that true today? "Does hard work ensure economic success in our culture? Can we all become modern-day Benjamin Franklins?" The answer is yes, but with
qualifications. Economic Success It is necessary to define what is meant by economic success before concluding whether it is possible to achieve in
todays environment. For some, economic success is a house in a subdivision with late-model cars in the driveway, accompanied by savings accounts and investments that provide for retirement and
leave a financial inheritance for the children. For others, it is living debt-free on a few acres of land in the country, either in a large, impressive house or
in a double-wide trailer. Others see economic success as comfortably being able to pay the costs of living in a city, without ever actually owning any real property.
In the end, economic success is whatever the individual defines it for himself. Degree of Risk Many
people work hard and are dedicated to their jobs. They spend years with the same employer and give their best, gaining nominal raises occasionally and holding hope that business
